Spot the revolver

image

The GP just… barely… fits in the little Versipack.
In other news I might be able to shoot it today. But then, I might not. It’s coming along just in case, though.

More GPr0n 100

Can you tell I’m stoked about this pistol in a way I haven’t been for a gun in a long while?

And while I had the big camera out, my dog was bugging me (I don’t think she really likes the clicky noises it makes, so she wanted to make sure it wasn’t going to eat me)

Awesome revolvers and cute puppies, what more do you want from me?

Springs and things

Put the 12 lb hammer spring and the 10 lb trigger spring into the GP100 last night, as I took the whole thing apart and put it back together again. Seems to still work. Unfortunately, it’s looking like a 95% chance of “Working this weekend,” so the true function test probably isn’t going to happen. Going down to my Uncle’s big Mardi Gras party–with food cooked by his friend from Louisiana–also probably isn’t going to happen.

Life gets in the way of life.

The next tweak

image

Bought some red enamel model paint, the black on black sight picture wasn’t doing it for me. The springs came in, now I just have to pick which ones I want to use.

Vast Improvement — or “A study in GP100 Grip Geometry” — or “I hate Hogues”

A hearty recommendation for these Altamont Grips I bought for my new GP100. No finger grips, and pretty wood inserts instead of that disgusting toady looking lump of a Hogue grip!

Nice checkered backstrap, too. The best part is that without the stupid hump on the back of the Hogues, THE GUN NOW POINTS WHERE I THINK IT OUGHT TO, which, in the grand scheme of things, is kind of important.

A few criticisms, though–the checkering was initially very, for lack of a better word, gooey. I think I got most of it with a pass of Hoppe’s, but at first it actually was leaving black checkering marks on my hand, just like tire tracks in a Looney Tunes cartoon. Another big complaint I have is that, though it came packaged with three screws of various sizes (though I can’t figure out why–aren’t all GP100 frames the same size, or at least close enough that one size would work?), one was obviously too small, one was barely too small, and one was so long that when you tightened it up it stuck an 1/8″ out the other side, right into your palm. I filed the long one off to get it to work, but I’m thinking I need to head down to the hardware store. Lastly, the scallop thumb cutout has a rather drastic edge that I think I’m going to whittle down so it doesn’t dig into my thumb as much. It gets dangerously close to precipitating another finger groove rant from me.

All in all, I like these new grips a lot. From my initial impressions, they’re a vast improvement over the idiotic Hogues. Hopefully sometime soon I can get out and shoot the darn thing.

GP stands for “Gun Pr0n”

So there it was, sitting forlornly in the used case. Turns out, it’s basically new (the paperwork in the box says October 2013) and I’m not sure that it’s even been fired yet, but I got 200 bucks off the price of the one in the New Cabinet, so I’m not going to complain. Seems to be a perfectly tight little (um, big?) gun, though I suppose final verdict on that will have to wait until it hits the range.

After having my 642 for all this time, I’m not sure how I feel about the button to open the cylinder up and the non-rotating ejector rod, but that’s not really anything that matters.  I really like the heft and lines of the design, despite what the internet forums say about GP100’s being chunky and ugly.  But you know how I feel about internet forum advice–after all, I bought a polymer-lower AR!

And, to rant just a little bit, I HATE FINGER GROOVES SOOOO MUCH. The guy at Hogue who they built this grip around can go and jump off a cliff for all I care. He must be a wookie or something, because they’re really quite ridiculously huge and mutatedly misshapen. Not only would the grooves only line up correctly for Andre the Giant, there’s a weird hump on the back that forces the gun to line up pointing so the front sight is about a half inch to the left of the rear sight, which is kind of amazing considering it’s a 4″ barrel. Already ordered a set of these with the silver-black inserts.  I don’t know, maybe the stock Hogues would work for someone… somewhere… but that person sure isn’t me.

Guess next I should look into holsters… and what were those springs you were talking about the other day, Butch?  Oh dear.  Seems I’ve found another way to spend money.
