Out of a meeting

The result of which is that we have more field work to do this afternoon, tomorrow, Saturday, probably Sunday, definitely Monday…

…for the next month or two.

How many hours are in a day, again?

I’m a pusher.

A dirty dirty dirt pusher. I push and sort dirt and rocks.

…how… terribly… exciting.

Righting the wrongs of the past

So last week was grouting the outlet, and this week is fixing the big cut they made back in September to fix the leaking gate which caused the culvert washout which you may or may not remember.  So I’m back out there for more 12 hour days.  Hopefully not many.  And hopefully this whole debacle can be taken care of and I can go back to my normal schedule, and my boss can go home and get a good night’s sleep (which he hasn’t done in a week and a half).  Life is like a box of chocolates–you never know what you’re gonna get.  Sometimes you get one that has a super hard caramel center that pulls out your fillings so you have to go to the dentist, and sometimes they’ve got those disgusting pink super-sweet “strawberry” flavored fillings that make you want to puke.

Today I learned that you can use WD-40 to clean asphalt tar off of a nuclear density gauge.

I hate plumbing, and I hate sitting on the floor in the soils lab

Unfortunately, when you have to do the first one you have to do the second one.

The good news: the drain pipe isn’t corroded or the p trap clogged anymore.

The bad news: the slow drain isn’t improved one whit.

Things that are exactly just as much fun as they sound

Hiking a half mile up a steep dam embankment with a five gallon bucket full of wet dirt and gravel (probably a bit more than 50 pounds, and just a bare wire handle for that matter). When you are already carrying another 5 gallon bucket with all your tools and instruments in it. And the ground is completely saturated so with every step you sink an inch down into the mud, and it sticks to your boots when you lift your foot.

All I can say is that I’m glad it wasn’t snowing, too.

Must be Monday

Can I just say that ever since I rolled my jeep, driving in the snow has really lost its appeal?

Why does it always take me about halfway through a project to realize that there’s a better, easier, more accurate way to do it, and so I have to go back to the beginning and start over?

Gah. I haz a dumb. It’s getting better, but sometimes it backslides.

Maybe someday I’ll stop talking about how cold it is

Not today though.

So, hey, how do you know it’s cold outside?

When the fingertips of your wet gloves make clacking noises when you drum then against your bucket.
